Celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month
It's Pride Month, people! And we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate! We are inspired by the bravery, authenticity, vision, and creativity displayed by our LGBTQ+ friends, neighbors, leaders, DJs, artists, and fellow human beings.
Pride Month, observed each year in June, is a time to honor and recognize the achievements and progress of the LGBTQ+ community and look ahead to future strides. The month of June is symbolic as it commemorates the iconic Stonewall Riots of 1969 – the event that placed the gay liberation movement on the map. The celebration was originally one day on the anniversary of the riots and was known as Christopher Street Liberation Day; by the late ‘90s, it had transitioned to an emphasis on pride and extended into a month-long festivity. During pride month, communities, groups, friends, and families gather to celebrate, yes, but also to reflect, protest, and set intentions for the next steps toward equality. Throughout June, cities across America host parties, festivals, parades, protests, poetry readings, support groups, and memorials to demonstrate visibility, strength, and pride.
Being an ally is a crucial component of the movement’s advancement toward equity and inclusion. As allies, we must show up, especially during Pride Month, to support and uplift our fellow human beings. Prism DJs is PROUD to stand with the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month and all months. There are many ways to participate in Pride Month, like attending or hosting local events, donating to organizations that support LGBTQ+ causes, learning more about issues and policies that affect the LGBTQ+ community, and supporting LGBTQ+ artists and businesses. One of our favorite Pride events at Prism DJs is LA Pride, which hosts LA Pride in the Park and the LA Pride Parade. It truly is a highlight of our year every summer.
As a DJ collective, we would be remiss if we didn’t take this opportunity to honor the groundbreaking LGBTQ+ DJs, musicians, artists, and allies who influence our work and careers. It’s a long list, but those at the top include Honey Dijon, Big Freedia, Kaytranada, Freddie Mercury, Lil Nas X, Janelle Monae, RuPaul, Kim Petras, and Madonna. Each of these artists has left a mark on us, shaping our vision and sound and inspiring us to use our platforms to support the LGBTQ+ community.
Throughout June, we’ll be sharing mixes featuring some of our favorite LGBTQ+ artists, leaders, supporters and classic hits. DJs from our Prism team – Dazzler, Hauskaat, Hunny Bee, Liz O., Ohla, Tonee Macara, and Sophenom – have created mixes that we hope will become the soundtrack to your Pride Month.
We are also proud to host a fundraiser in support of the Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning) young people.
